From an early age, I’ve always been keen, or should I say, crazy about sports and what drives people to succeed.
On leaving school in London, I had this fire in my belly to go off and make something of myself. Something others including my headmaster didn’t think I was capable of.
I didn’t know what it was, I just wanted to do something that was exciting that involved people.
That led me into a long and varied career in international commerce, as a broker, negotiating large oil shipments across the globe.
It was incredibly exciting and alluring. I loved dealing with people from all over the world with different cultures and ideals.
At the age of 22, I co-founded a boutique brokerage in London.
I was fortunate enough to become a trusted advisor and thinking partner for some of the world’s leading companies, negotiating contracts on their behalf, eventually became one of the top brokers in my field, in the world.
It wasn’t without its challenges and it wasn’t always plain sailing (pun intended).
Being available, on call and expected to perform 24 a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, is not for the feint hearted and it takes its toll on all of us at some point.
I know because I’ve lived it. I’ve experienced the highs, the very lows.
A series of events including a life changing spinal injury, losing my thirty year career, home and everything I had worked for pushed me to the limit, but somehow managed to get up and keep going.
Now, my focus is on helping individuals, teams and organisations to build better performing teams and leaders, that are able to achieve those bigger goals, without burning themselves out in the process.
From a business standpoint, I have resided and worked in both the UK and the US, I’ve travelled extensively worldwide, and collaborated with companies across the globe. This experience has equipped me with a profound understanding of the significance of cultural nuances in effective communication, spanning from junior levels to C suite.
I’ve written about improving individual and team performance, self-leadership and performance psychology for Surrey Golf magazine and Inside Golf, Australia’s most read golf magazine.
In my talks and presentations, I share insights, real life stories of success and failure, along with psychology based science to inspire and challenge your thinking and give you the tools and strategies to overcome the obstacles and challenges, to perform at a higher level.
